“Hospitality should have no other nature than love.”
All Hallows Convent is situated in 22 acres of beautiful grounds, on the outskirts of the village of Ditchingham near the historic town of Bungay. We are approximately 12 miles south of Norwich on the B1332 road, and stand on a small country lane, away from the bustle of life and the drone of traffic.
We offer guest accommodation in peaceful environment for retreat, rest, reflection and renewal in our two houses; “Lavinia House” at Ditchingham within the Convent grounds and “All Hallows House” in Norwich, adjacent to the Shrine of Julian. These may be booked by individuals or small groups for a maximum stay of ten days at Lavinia and six days at All Hallows.
We are an Anglican Religious Community, but our facilities are available to all who would like to come. Individually guided retreats, spiritual direction or a listening ear are available services here but we do not provide therapeutic or medical support. All visitors must be able to care for themselves or bring an appropriate carer with them. We regret too that we are unable to cater for young families.
We also organise a programme of quiet days throughout the year. These cost £12 and run on Saturdays.
All Hallows House Norwich
All Hallows House, Norwich is an oasis in a busy city, providing space for those wishing for a time of study, quiet or private retreat and also for those visiting the Julian church and shrine. We regularly welcome overseas visitors. The house has three double and three single bedrooms, two sitting rooms, a dining room and a chapel. Wi-Fi is accessible in the building.
A small pleasant garden at the back looks over the church garden and the shrine of Julian of Norwich. Next door, the Julian Centre houses an extensive spiritual library. There are also cards, books and other items for sale.
The house caters for visitors requiring bed, breakfast and an evening meal.
To ensure the smooth running of the house, All Hallows will be closed from Wednesday evenings until Friday mornings.
Lavinia House is set in the gardens of All Hallows Convent, surrounded by farmland. It is suitable for individuals or small groups. Our wish is to provide our guests with the opportunity of a calm, peaceful and restful atmosphere. Guests may be residential for short breaks or may come as day visitors.
The house offers a large and small sitting room, the latter being used as a quiet room for those on silent retreat. In the larger sitting room, books and a television are provided for relaxation. The house has its own spacious garden. There is a dining room and a large kitchen. It is possible for guests to be either self-catering or full board during their stay. Guests are welcome to join the Sisters for their midday meal at 12.30 pm. Food is provided in the Lavinia House kitchen, and guests are asked to prepare their breakfast and supper at a time of their choosing.
The house has two ground floor bedrooms, and three singles, one twin-bedded and one double room on the first floor. Following a recent refurbishment all bedrooms are now en-suite.
We are pleased and excited to announce the opening of a poutinia (indoor hermitage) within Lavinia House. This spacious first floor self-contained flat is available for those seeking complete solitude during their stay.
The Convent chapel is within walking distance of the house. Guests are welcome to join the Sisters for services if they wish or to use the Chapel for their own personal quiet times; also, of course, to walk in the Convent grounds.
Our Ditchingham grounds are designed to support quiet reflection. Different habitats encourage and host an abundance of wildlife. Set in the countryside we experience very little traffic noise; it is mainly bird song and honey bees, or just silence. When you have finished exploring our grounds there are many delightful walks in the surrounding countryside.
There is no Wi-Fi available at Lavinia House, but guests are welcome to use the internet connection in Rowan sitting room in St Michael’s House.
Booking and Costs
As a registered charity, All Hallows does not ask for a set fee to cover the cost of your stay, but invites donations to support our work. While we do encourage our guests to make a realistic payment towards covering this, we know it is not always possible. We do not wish to preclude any who cannot afford these prices, and we hope that the generosity of those who can afford more will cover the shortfall of those who cannot. Our current suggested donation is £40 per person per 24 hours on a full board basis. For self-catering accommodation we suggest £20 per night. (Self catering is available at Ditchingham only)
British Tax payers are invited to use Gift Aid for their donations.
